Questions we hear a lot

Not covered here? Call (484) 576-7394 and ask.

Can you fix the problem the same day?

We make every effort to, and more often than not we can. Some jobs need a township permit, an inspection or work from the utility, and those run on their schedules.

How will I know what it costs?

Ask us. Once we have diagnosed the problem, we give you an upfront price to fix it before any work starts. Estimates are free.

Why does my breaker keep tripping?

Usually an overloaded circuit: too much plugged in or running at once. A short from faulty wiring, an appliance or a fixture can also trip it. If it keeps happening, have it looked at rather than resetting it again.

What are GFCI and AFCI protection, and do I need them?

A GFCI outlet or breaker cuts power within a fraction of a second when current leaks to ground, which protects you from shock in kitchens, baths and outdoors. An AFCI breaker detects the small arcs that start electrical fires. Newer code requires both in many rooms, and older homes benefit from adding them.

Are battery smoke detectors enough?

Current code calls for hard-wired, interconnected smoke detectors with battery backup, so when one sounds they all do. If you have gas, propane or an attached garage, carbon monoxide detection is required near sleeping areas too.

Is a plug-in surge strip enough protection?

It helps the one device plugged into it. A whole-house surge protector installed at your panel covers everything on the system, including phone and cable equipment.

Are you licensed and insured?

Thompson Electric is a registered Pennsylvania contractor (PA027930), and our electricians are master electricians. You can verify the registration on the Attorney General's contractor lookup.
